“If you like to think about the biggest questions, like `Do I exist?` or `What does it mean to be ethical?` This major is probably for you. The lessons can be a lot of fun if you participate in the discussions. The goal of the philosophy major at NYU Abu Dhabi is to introduce students to a wide range of philosophical problems, to familiarize students with influential philosophical responses to these problems, and most importantly, to train students to engage with themselves in a way that meets the highest intellectual standards. Philosophy belongs to the humanities and shares an emphasis on human concerns with other human disciplines, but also differs from others in some ways. Some areas of philosophy may be more like social sciences, such as psychology or linguistics, than English literature or art history; Some areas of philosophy are a bit like mathematics or physics. All areas of philosophy require reading, writing, and speaking skills that are not specifically taught in any other discipline, neither in the humanities nor outside. Empirical Moral Psychology PHIL-UA 43 Prerequisites: an introductory course. Offered every two years. 4 points.

4 points. An introduction to philosophy through the study of some of the most important and influential writings in its history. Among the authors studied are Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Hume, Kant, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein. In addition to these purely philosophical fields, there are interdisciplinary fields in which philosophers deal with fundamental questions from other disciplines. These fields include philosophy of science (including the philosophies of physics, biology, cognitive science, and social sciences); philosophy of mathematics; philosophy of art; Philosophy of law; and philosophy of religion. Many academic disciplines that are now established as independent fields of research began as branches of philosophy. One of the most important tools of philosophy is logic – another area of research that comes from philosophers. For a course with a grade below C, no credit will be given for the major.
Continental philosophy of the twentieth century PHIL-UA 39 Formerly modern continental philosophy. Prerequisite: an introductory course. Offered regularly. 4 points. Examines some of the most important philosophical ideas and developments of the “continental” tradition in Europe in the twentieth century. After an overview of certain developments in the nineteenth century, includes major works by Heidegger and Sartre, and a selection, determined by the particular orientation of the teacher, of writings by personalities such as Husserl, Gadamer, Arendt, Beauvoir, Merleau-Ponty, Foucault and Deleuze. The philosophy program is not sequential in the manner of mathematics or economics. After an introductory course, you can take other courses in almost any order (with the exception of “topical” courses at the highest level, each of which contains an additional prerequisite in a relevant area). Although there is no prescribed order of subjects, we can recommend logic (PHIL-UA 70) and the core courses in the history of philosophy (PHIL-UA 20 and 21) as useful next steps after your introduction. “I guess most philosophy majors intend to go to law school or graduate school for their PhD. Those who go to law school probably want to put their 4-year reasoning into practice, while those who go to PhD.
